Taking the Helm

Lena

“You’re going to have to take the helm on this, Lena. You’re one of them, they’ll trust you. They won’t trust me.” Romeo stopped at the door to the gym.

“What am I supposed to say? Everyone is going to freak out.”

“The truth. Get the story out, and if anyone tries to stop you I’ll back you up.” He placed a hand on my cheek and smiled down at me. I felt my heart speed up, my stomach turned with anxiety. Even in the midst of all this chaos his touch was setting me on edge.

I didn’t want to do this. I wanted to go back in my room and continue our conversation.

Ridley groaned.

“Dammit.” I looked down at the asshole. He had caused quite a mess.

“You got this,” Romeo said and grabbed Ridley by the leg. “Open the door for me, time for a shit show.”

The gym went deathly quiet when Romeo dragged the unconscious Ridley across the floor and dropped him in the middle of the room.

“What happened to him?” A woman pushed through the crowd, her voice was scared and loud. “Oh my God, what happened to Ridley?”

The crowd began to murmur as the woman, Stacey, one of the civilians, kept voicing the same question over and over again. I wished she would shut-up.

The people in the gym were beginning to panic and I saw some of the soldiers move forward, weapons gripped in their nervous hands. I didn’t blame them, this situation would have me on edge too. No one knew Romeo. All they saw was this new guy drag in their leader who had obviously had something violent happen to him.

“It’s okay.” I held up my hands and I repeated it a few times until the room quieted down. “Let me tell you what happened. Ridley is fine, he’s passed out. He’ll be fine.”

Everyone looked at me suspiciously now. Great.

“What the hell happened, Lena?” one of the soldiers asked while looking like he was ready to take me out.

“He was drunk, again,” I explained. I knew the rumors of our hallway incident had gone around the group. This would calm them down.

“That liquor is meant for medical uses not drinking.” Stacey went from suspicious to pissed at Ridley in a matter of seconds.

“I know, I know, but there is a bigger issue.” I looked at the soldier who had questioned me and he nodded to let me know he wanted to hear what I had to say. “He came in, stumbling, and he threatened us. Romeo mostly, he wanted him to leave. Said we weren’t leaving and going to New Orleans and Romeo should leave. He changed his mind.” I looked at the faces around me, all were wide-eyed and most looked pissed.

“What!” someone cried from the back. “It’s not safe here! We have to leave.”

“That’s exactly what Romeo and I said. He wasn’t hearing it. He said he was in charge and he was making the decision for all of us. When we said we would leave and anyone could come with us, he said we couldn’t leave.
